Medications for Overactive Bladder
If the muscles in the bladder contract too much the result is an overactive bladder. Anticholinergics or antimuscarinics are routinely prescribed for an overactive bladder. They work by relaxing the bladder muscle and reducing the contractions of the bladder wall. This decreases the need to urinate therefore reducing urinary frequency.
Anticholinergic/amtimuscarinic medication includes:
- Oxybutynin (Cystrin, Ditropan, Lyrinel XL (modified release), Kentera (skin patch)
- Propiverine (Detrunorm®)
- Tolterodine (Detrusitol®)
- Solifenacin Succinatte (Vesicare®)
- Fesoterodine Fumarate (Toviaz®)
- Trospium Chloride (Regurin®)
