Costs

With no cause yet known for Interstitial Cystitis, and with the many treatments that are available it is inevitable that many sufferers will frequently visit their GP or medical specialist to obtain treatment for their symptoms.

No treatment regime has been laid down for the guidance of the medical profession, and as such the range of care offered by the NHS varies from region to region, and specialist to specialist. Many sufferers have multiple visits and admissions to hospital for treatment, all of which has a cost to the NHS.

In a House of Commons written response to Alan Johnson MP, the Department of Health reported that in 1997/98 there were 2,136 admissions to hospital in which the primary diagnosis was recorded as Interstitial Cystitis. This level of admission, coupled with the level of outpatient consultations and consultations with primary carers amounts to a vast expense to the NHS.
