Medications for Bacterial Cystitis
You can purchase over the counter remedies for bacterial cystitis from your local pharmacist. These contain potassium or sodium citrate. They work by making the urine alkaline and thus easing discomfort. Check with your GP or pharmacist that these can be taken in addition to any other medication you may be taking.
If self help methods have no effect and symptoms continue then you should consult your GP. A short course of antibiotics may be required. Remember to finish the course. Antibiotics may cause thrush. If this happens to you consult your local pharmacist or medical practitioner.
Some people may find that infections recur and a longer course of antibiotics may be necessary.
A supplement is now available called D-Mannose, a natural carbohydrate already present in small quantities in the bladder, it is believed to work by protecting the bladder from bacterial attack.
